Hong Kong In-Between

Book—2014

With this book, Parallel Lab published their research project about Hong Kong, which explores the interweaving evolution of the city, its architecture, and its people. Parallel Lab is an architectural office and laboratory for urban research based in Hong Kong founded by Swiss architects Géraldine Borio and Caroline Wüthrich.

We wanted the book to reflect the feeling of this dense and complicated city, full of narrow side streets and small businesses. The main design decision was to translate the in-between spaces
of the city on to the page by setting the text on opposite edges
of the spreads and using the in-between space for image material.
We wanted the book to also function as a guide and decided to include maps of Hong Kong’s backlane network. This was the main reason for the portable format of the book.
